Graham Smith

I think I’m supposed to be writing this in the third person. Next time.

I’ve done a lot of things so far in my life. Some have worked. Some haven’t. But none of it’s been boring.

Photography has been a huge part of that since 1998. It’s naturally changed shape over the years but it still inspires me daily. In 2011 I launched A Pocket Camera, one of the first platforms to take mobile photography seriously.

Along the way I’ve managed and tour-managed bands, travelled the world, started and sold publishing companies, won awards, released photo books, exhibited internationally… This probably makes it sound like everything’s worked out. It hasn’t. But it’s always been interesting.

As of 2025 I’m heavily involved in too many projects to mention (my Apple Notes is a complete mess). Photography is still a huge part of it (very much focused on making smartphone photography properly accepted by the art world). But there are many other things on the go too. Keep it fun.

1998–2003: Started out documenting life in the DIY scene — zines, self-publishing, independent releases.

2005: Going Deaf For A Living photo book released. 550 signed copies. Sold out.

2003–2012: Exhibited internationally. Directed two short films.

2010: Lex van Rossen European Photographer of the Year.

2011: Launched “A Pocket Camera”, one of the first websites and communities in the world dedicated to smartphone photography.

2012–2020: Stepped back from public work. Private print sales. Low-key creative work whilst traveling and working on other projects.

2020–2025: Released new limited edition print runs (now sold out). Spent time quietly shaping new projects.

2025: Focused on fresh work, pushing smartphone photography and a host of other projects and to-do lists. Keep it fun!
